Could you ever imagine in your country being a theocracy? A theocracy is when the laws of the religion are also the laws of the entire country. Iran is a country where the government is a theocracy. Since Iran is a theocracy that means that they have different types of punishment. The reason they have different types of punishment is because they will use the types of punishment that have been recorded in the Qur'an.
In Iran most of the punishments involved getting killed or brutally injured. Last year in 2011 there were a lot of exacutions for aggravated rape, murder, and large scale drug trafficking(Capital punishment in Iran, 1). In the US if you did any of those three crimes most of the time you would be sentences to an amount of years in prison. In Iran its much harsher.
Some of the punishment that is used or has been used is capital punishment, firing squad, hanging, stoning, and mutilation. Capital punishment is a more fancy term for the death sentence. Iran is in second place out of the whole world for using the death sentence the most. Firing squad is just a group of troops with guns but only one person has their gun with an actually bullet, the others just have blanks. They all fire at the same time so no one can tell who actually killed the person. Hanging is where you noose someone and hang them till the sufficate. Stoning was one thing that Iran still uses that was also used in the Qur'an. When someone is stoned that are burried into the ground with only thier head above ground. When the criminal is burried the government stands behind a line and throws stone big enough to fit in their hand at the man/womens head until they are killed. Mutilation is used in Iran and also was used in the Qur'an. It is where when someone degrads the body of someone else. For example amputation of fingers or any other body parts, eye goudging, chemical blinding. et cetera.
Sometimes when there are protest the goverment will just send out people to beat and stop the protesters from protesting. In the book Persepolis, Marji and her family go out to protest. When they start protesting the government comes and starts beating people to get them to stop protesting. They will beat the people protesting and they will also if need to take some of them to jail
This is the example from Persepolis when the goverment is beating the protesters.
Anoosh before his execution talking to Marji.
The size of the rocks they throw at the people when they are getting stoned to death
